Beginning of South Park High School - 08/31/04 03:56 AM

I received a letter from Jane Miller Hebert . She wrote how South Park got started and who was the first Principal. The first graduating class had 7 graduates. The last class of South Park High 1986 had 176. You will want to read the article and learn all about South Park High School. When you come to meeting(Sept. 19) for Alumni Directory you can read article for yourself.

Visited the Heratige Room at South Park today. It is a neat room. Brought back many memories. The first yearbook is 1917 and talk about small classes. Go by and see the pictures and books there. Be sure and sign visitor book.

It is in the library at South Park Middle School. Our old library where Mrs. Paine kept a tight hand over the books in there.

If you would get me her name and address so that I can send her information about alumni association. Until further notice there will not be meeting for association members. The board meets once a month to take care of business.

When you go to High School go to Principal's office and tell the secretary that you want to go to Heritage Room and she will give you the ok. Once in Library tell the Librarian you want to go in Heritage Room and she will opened it up. Be sure to sign guest book. There are annuals, pictures, etc.

The South Park Community dates back to 1890 when the Spark Brothers purchased 34 acres just a mile north from "Spindletop Hill". In 1893 Jefferson County Commissioners legally created the South Park Common School District Six. And with the help of J. F. Kline and George Rexes along with the two Sparks brothers South Park School system was founded. Kline is credited with coming up with the name "South Park" for the little wooden school. Sometime later someone nailed the name "South Park" on the corner of the building making it offical. After the Oil boom of 1901 things began to change in the rural South Park area. February,1907 South Park voted on its first school house bonds. The board purchased the land at the Highland location and constructed a twelve roon brick building which was completed in 1908. 1922 new plans were made for a new building which would house South Park High School. In 1923 the building was completed and it housed South Park High School and Lamar Tech College.Until 1986 is was South Park High School home of the GREENIES.

The Heritage Room is pretty cool, but I just thought it was awesome walking the halls again. I enjoyed that as much as the room.

Ray Ashbury's book is GREAT. There are so many interesting facts that I never knew growing up in South Park. No wonder we have so much PRIDE.
