URGENT - SP STILL AT RISK - MEETING - 01/25/08 07:16 AM

!!! WARNING !!!

SPHS BUILDING DEMOLITION STILL POSSIBLE

meeting scheduled:

St. Paul Methodist Fellowship Hall

4445 Pershing Street & Woodrow

Saturday, February 9, 2008 1:30 P.M.

Now that the bond issue has passed and it has been determined that a new structure will replace South Park Middle School, those of us who want to preserve the building are now placed in the unfortunate position of finding a use for our beloved South Park in order to still save it. That means we will have to find a developer who will be willing to take over the building. Before we can entice a developer, we must bring the South Park Neighborhood to a level that will convince that developer that such an investment would be merited.

Bear in mind that BISD is currently seeking "suitable" property on which to build the new facility. One option that is being considered is Alice Keith Park. In order for that to happen, BISD will have to negotiate with the City, and it might have to go to a vote to the citizens before the park could be relinquished for the structure. To ask South Park Neighborhood to give up Alice Keith, too, only adds insult to injury. However, if no land is available, the option to demolish our school for the land access could very well still be on the table. Our only hope for victory is to find a working and realistic plan of development is so attractive that BISD would not in good faith compromise that potential for growth of the community.

We have scheduled a meeting to begin planning our strategy for saving SPHS. It will take all our collective efforts and individual ideas to accomplish this, so please contact all the supporters you know and bring them with you to the meeting. It is urgent that we find a viable solution that will maintain the historical integrity of the school, as well as be of significant benefit to the South Park Community.

A few preliminary objectives of the meeting are:

1. Combine and unite the SP Alumni Association, the Class of '67 Foundation, the SP Neighborhood Association, the Save South Park Group, and any and all concerned citizens and alumni for this mission.

2. Nominate and solicit individuals who will serve as a steering committee.

3. Organize e-mail chains in order to expedite the most effective announcement system for updates or meetings.
