Deadlines for BISD bond proposal looms

Little more than six weeks remain before the Sept. 5 deadline for school trustees to call an election if a bond proposal is to go to voters in November.

On two issues, consensus still appeared out of reach Monday: what to do about South Park Middle School and whether to present a bond issue to voters as a single large package or piecemeal.

An engineering report found that rebuilding South Park would be more feasible than renovating it based on potential for unforeseen costs, scheduling issues and the need for a functional building. South Park alumni have been circulating a petition to preserve the historic structure.

In addition to rebuilding or renovating, committee member Jennifer Swantner on Monday revived the idea of closing the school instead of demolishing it and sending South Park students elsewhere.[/b] No other committee members chimed in to support the suggestion.

Committee co-chair Paul Brown said later that the area needed a middle school.

The committee meets again at 6 p.m. Monday (Jul 30) at the Beaumont Independent School District Administration building at Harrison Avenue and Interstate 10.
